Been looking for this type of book for months! My granddaughter had a traumatic accident with a dog six months ago. She was four years old, then. Her face and eye changed forever. All sorts of specialists are attending her, and of course, had surgery by three different teams of specialists and more to come. Books like these help me talk with her; I need all the help I can get because feelings and thoughts change as she grows and is exposed to stares, questions, injections, surgeries, etc. Her unexpected questions or statements make me anxious. All the learning I can get from books like this one is so important and appreciated. You might not be aware, but there aren't resources out there on dog bites and scars they cause. I found great resources on autism, special needs, disabilities, down syndrome, bullying, blindness, wheelchairs, sexual abuse, and anything else we can imagine, but nothing on children's scars. Just the book needed to help a child (5 year old in this case) to understand how to handle a permanent scar from a traumatic event. Illustrated and easy to understand from the child's point of view. Definitely recommended.
SCARS is an informative book about an often difficult subject to address, particularly with young children. However, this well-versed author has done a terrific job in the handling of this delicate subject and she has done so with sensitivity and intelligence. The illustrations are colorful, delightful, informative, and often entertaining. Parents and children will appreciate this book, as will anyone else who is devoted to the care and welfare of our children. I recommend this book highly for your home library.
I think all parents have been waiting for a book like this--it is intuitive and informative. The painful issue of scars is so challenging for children and as parents we are hard-pressed to find the words. But these words and pictures live up to the challenge. The authors do an enchanting job of taking us through the difficult topic,in a lovely way. This is a must-have for every pediatrician's office and for every children's library.
